Jepun, the Mischief Sentinel, is a joyful guardian of nature, protecting forests from both accidental and deliberate fires. This whimsical spirit guides lost children and play tricks on adventurous people, leaving them with mystical stories to share.
During my month at the Bali Art Residency 2025, I created Mischief Sentinel as a reflection of Balinese animism, fused with my own culture, the Brazilian folklore. The monkey embodies nature's wisdom and joy, while the mask combines elements of Bali's Barong with Brazil's Boitatá and Curupira. This transcultural character finds its home in the tropical forest, a connection that goes beyond oceans.
